Painted Ceiling in Ibra-Qanatir
A painted ceiling in a dwelling in Al-Qanatir in Safalat Ibra, Ash-Sharqiya North Governorate, Sultanate of Oman. The ceiling is dated 1392 AH, corresponding to 1971-1972 CE. Interestingly, the walls of the dwelling are of a ‘new’ material at that time, concrete blocks, though the ceiling is in the traditional style of palm beams overlaid with palm-frond matting. The broader palette is indicative of a wider range of paints being available on the market. This is probably one of the last traditional palm-beam ceilings of the settlement.
